Quilting is a wonderful hobby, but it was once more than that. Women made quilts to help keep their family warm in the winter, to liven up the walls of their home, and to express themselves artistically. Yes, even though making quilts was required, that didn't mean they weren't made with artistic design in mind. Women would use special designs for their quilt blocks that captured meaning for them and one of the most popular was the sunshine block pattern. Now we have captured the sunshine pattern in our stunning Sunshine Quilt Block stencil. This arrangement of triangles and squares creates a unique shape that resembles a sun with its rays shooting out from it. It's truly lovely and can be captured in so many ways with this stencil, even if you don't know how to quilt. We wanted to make this stencil as versatile as possible, so we laser-cut it in a range of sizes. You can paint this design on a wall or window in a quilting supply shop. Paint it onto a tabletop to make it pop. Paint it onto wood, metal, or canvas to create some quilt-inspired art. WHY DO WE RECOMMEND MYLAR?

As mentioned before, the best way to achieve a perfectly painted stencil with a very nice paint edge is to use a stencil material that is as thin as possible for your project. At the same time, you also want a material that wont absorb paint or any liquid because this will cause the stencil to deteriorate. A stencil made from paper, cardstock or paperboard will become saturated with paint or ink rather quickly, and this causes a crusty, uneven edge that can never be removed.

Another option for stencils, and one that quickly comes to mind when we discuss durability, is metal stencils. While these thick, unbendable stencils do have their place for some industrial applications where paint overspray and running doesnt quite matter as much, they can be very expensive and heavy to ship.

There are some other plastics that are used for stencil manufacturing, but these are typically cut with a die cutter so there is a limited amount of detail that can be achieved. And because this older, traditional process takes so much work and expense to set up for each stencil design, the minimum are often in the 1000s.
